FIXING YOUR THOUGHTS ~ Precious Victor Akah
Hebrews 3:1 says, "Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest."
The above Scripture admonishes us to fix our thoughts on Jesus. Fixing your thoughts on Jesus means constantly think about Jesus; consider Jesus; think of what Jesus did when faced with certain situations and do likewise; let Jesus be always in your thoughts.
When temptation to sin comes and the urge to give in rises and becomes strong, just fixing your thoughts on Jesus or thinking about Him, can help you overcome. Just remembering what He endured on the cross and all that He suffered and sacrificed to deliver you from the firm grip of sin (slavery to sin) and give freedom back to you, will help you overcome some temptations.
I mean Scripture testifies: "Now you are free from your slavery to sin, and you have become slaves to righteous living" (Romans 6:18). This great deliverance was given to us by Jesus Christ. Why then should we not do what He says and live by His standards?
When trials of faith comes, fixing your thoughts on Jesus will help you not to lose your precious faith, apostate or backslide. Just like the church of Christ in Philadelphia (Revelation 3:7-13) who held strongly to their faith and never abandoned God nor denied His Name in the face of trials, we are to be strong and unswerving in the face of trials.
Trials only test the genuineness of your faith according to 1 Peter 1:6-7, "So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while. These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world."
A lot of Christians backslide, abandon their faith or give up hope because they failed to adhere to the instruction of Hebrews 3:1. The reality is: life challenges will come. Temptations will come. Trials of your faith will come. And if you're not fixing your thoughts on Jesus, you'll fix it on the challenges/temptations/trials confronting you and that will overwhelm you and ultimately cause you to lose faith and hope in God.
But when you fix your thoughts on Jesus regardless of what you're passing through, your faith will stay alive, empowering you to stay faithful to Jesus - knowing He'll definitely come through for you.
The urge/pressure to fix your thoughts on your present challenge will be strong, but you must choose to fix your thoughts on Jesus, because that's one of the surest ways to overcome life's challenges as a child of God.
WHY SHOULD YOU FIX YOUR THOUGHTS ON JESUS?
1. Because it keeps depression, worry, joylessness and hopelessness far away from you.
2. Because it is one of the keys to overcoming negative situations.
3. Because it's an instruction from God.
4. Because it will give you rest and peace of mind. You'll be at peace in the midst of challenges.
Start fixing your thoughts on Jesus today!
Shalom.
