SELF OR GOD? –Part 2
“But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy..” 2 Timothy 3:1-2.
Results of Loving Self:
Unfulfilled destiny
A man or a woman who is consumed with the love of self cannot fulfill their destiny - God’s plan for their life. The love of self will always put its victims off course, thereby making them do things contrary to God’s established plan and will for their life. Only when a man is operating and walking in the love of God will he know, rightly appreciate, and fulfill God’s plan for their life.
To walk with God and fulfill one’s destiny, you must be ruled by the love of God and not the love of self. The desires of SELF are harmful, unhealthy and destructive, and if you live a lifestyle of meeting and gratifying those sensual desires, you will not only live short on earth, but sad to say, you will live a miserable short life on earth and a miserable long life in Hell.
SELF for instance, desires to engage in sex before marriage, watch porn, masturbate, lust after someone who is not your spouse, engage in homosexual practices (which comes with unpleasant consequences). It desires to imbibe alcoholic beverages, snort narcotics, smoke tobacco (which is dangerous to health); to gamble, to prostitute, to seek illegal, fast, or diabolic means of living rich and luxurious life. It also thirsts for night clubbing, going to ungodly parties, becoming a gigolo, dancing nakedly at nightclubs or sleeping with men for money and material things (which is not only dangerous but brings grief and sorrows). SELF wants to dress indecently (which can attract rape or attract the wrong people to you that will ruin your life and marital destiny). It wants to gaze at ungodly, sensual movies, listen and watch God-dishonoring music, and feed on ungodly TV programmes (which elicits ungodly behavior and harms the spirit of a man). It also wants to take or give bribe (which is illegal), to cheat, deceive or lie to people for personal gains; to envy and steal, to covet what is another’s, to engage in adultery, and to do all sorts of shameful, terrible things that are unhealthy, ungodly, vicious, immoral and destructive.
So clearly, it is really very unwise for anyone to choose to be ruled, governed, controlled and led by the ‘love of self, rather than the love of God, which produce righteous desires, good deeds, virtuous character, godly behavior, healthy habits and godly living.
Galatians 6:8 warns thus: “If you follow your selfish desires (live to gratify the desires of SELF), you will harvest destruction, but if you follow the Spirit, you will harvest eternal life.”
Whoever then desires to fulfill their glorious destiny and God’s good plan for their life as Jeremiah 29:11 records, must consciously walk in the love of God and not give room for the love of self to reign in their life. Galatians 5:24 says: “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature (SELF) to his cross and crucified them there.” If you’ve been walking in the love of self as a Christian, you must intentionally nail the wrong passions and ungodly desires of SELF to the cross of Christ and crucify them totally.
Genuinely decide to be led and guided by the Holy Spirit, and submit totally to His leadership and guidance, this way, the love of self will never replace the love of God in your heart. “So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won't be doing what your sinful nature (SELF) craves.“ Galatians 5:16
